In Inuktitut “akiani” means “across” or “on the other side”. In cross-cultural competency we practice crossing to “the other side” to better understand one another.

At Akiani Consulting we believe that cross-cultural competency has an important role to play in Inuit self-determination. It provides practical strategies that organizations can employ to improve Inuit hiring and retention at all levels, amplifying Inuit voices and supporting Inuit leadership.

Beyond Cultural Sensitivity

The impact of cross-cultural competency moves beyond that of cultural sensitivity training, towards improved communication, relationships, morale, employee retention, and cultural safety in the workplace.

“I have learned so much more than from any personal research I have done. Not only about Inuit culture but about myself as well.”
“The manner of facilitation was very engaging and authentic. The information was invaluable. The workshop was small and the workers were engaged.”
“Thank you so much for this training. I enjoyed every minute. I learned so much and the training was so engaging. Great facilitation and I loved hearing stories that Kevin shared from elders.”
“You two balance each other very well during these workshops. It’s great to hear perspectives from both cultural lenses. Great job! Thoroughly enjoyed this.”

“To be heard, you must speak the language of
the one you want to listen.”
